Question 1

How long should the family photo portion of the timeline take?

Accepted Answer

Plan on roughly 3–4 minutes per grouping once everyone is gathered. A typical list of 15–20 family combinations runs about 30–45 minutes if a coordinator or family wrangler calls names — and closer to 75 minutes if you rely on the photographer to round people up between shots. Building the checklist in advance and assigning a wrangler is the single biggest time saver.

Question 2

How do we handle divorced parents and step-families without awkward photos?

Accepted Answer

List each parent's required groupings separately and never assume both parents will appear in the same frame. The Additional Notes field is the right place to capture sensitivities — for example, 'Mom and Dad should not be photographed together,' or 'Stepmom is included only in groupings explicitly listed.' Share the final checklist with your photographer a week before the wedding so there are no surprises during family formals.

Question 3

Should grandparents be included in family formals or saved for later?

Accepted Answer

Always shoot grandparents first in the family formal lineup. Standing in heels or dress shoes for 30+ minutes is hard at any age, and pulling grandparents off the line first means they can sit, hydrate, or head to cocktail hour while you finish the rest of the groupings. The same logic applies to anyone with limited mobility or young children in the bridal party.

Question 4

When during the day should family photos happen?

Accepted Answer

Most couples shoot family formals immediately after the ceremony, while everyone is already gathered and dressed. If you're doing a first look, the wedding party and immediate family portraits can move earlier in the day — leaving only extended family for after the ceremony, which usually shaves 20–30 minutes off the gap between the ceremony and your entrance to cocktail hour.

Question 5

Do I really need to give the photographer a written list?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Photographers are skilled at composing portraits, but they can't guess at which uncle is from which side or whether a grandparent has passed. A written checklist removes guesswork, prevents missed combinations, and keeps the day moving — which is why every working wedding photographer asks for one. Print two copies on the day: one for the photographer, one for the family wrangler.

Question 6

Can we add cultural or religious family combinations not on the default list?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely — the 'Other shots' field under each section lets you write custom groupings in plain English. Common additions include extended family from cultural traditions (e.g., aunties, godparents, sponsors, religious officiants), close family friends treated as relatives, and beloved pets. Anything you write into the field flows straight into the printable checklist.
