Question 1

When should we start planning our wedding?

Accepted Answer

Twelve to fourteen months before the date is the comfortable window: popular venues and photographers book 12–18 months out, and gowns can take 6–8 months including alterations. Planning on a shorter runway is completely doable — the checklist simply compresses, and the early phases become 'this week' instead of 'this quarter.' The venue, photographer, and caterer are the bookings to prioritize first on any timeline.

Question 2

What should we book first?

Accepted Answer

Venue first, always — it locks the date, the guest capacity, and a big share of the budget. Photographer and caterer come next because the good ones book furthest ahead and can only serve one wedding per day. Everything else (florals, cake, transportation, stationery) has more supply and shorter lead times.

Question 3

Can we plan a wedding in 6 months or less?

Accepted Answer

Yes — thousands of couples do. Enter your date above and the checklist stamps a real 'done by' date on every phase, so you can see which checkpoints are already behind you and tackle them first. Short-timeline couples usually gain flexibility by considering Friday/Sunday dates and off-peak months, where venue and vendor availability opens up dramatically.

Question 4

How do wedding planners use this checklist with clients?

Accepted Answer

Planners use it as a shared expectation-setter in early meetings: print it with the couple's real dates and walk through what is already late, what is on deck, and what the planner owns versus the couple. Many planners then manage the same phases as tasks in Colara, where each item gets an owner, a due date, and reminders the couple can see.

Question 5

Is this checklist really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. No account, no credit card. Enter your date, check off what you've already done, and print it. If you want the checklist to live somewhere smarter than the refrigerator door, a free Colara account turns each item into a real task with due dates and reminders.

Question 6

What gets forgotten most often?

Accepted Answer

The unglamorous last mile: the marriage license (validity windows vary by state, so it has its own timing), vendor meals, tip envelopes, and deciding who hands them out. A written checklist with a named owner for each of those is the difference between a smooth day and a scramble.
